In November, 2008, in Nashville, Tennessee, a second grade basketball team was formed that consisted of both urban and suburban youth from the same local, elementary school. At the onset of the 2009 school year, the urban youth had been rezoned and no longer attended the same school as the suburban youth, hence, making it difficult for the students to play on the same sports’ teams. Students and families from both schools were disappointed that the urban and suburban students’ mutually beneficial relationships had been affected by the change.
Therefore, Donald Wynn, a former collegiate athlete and K.K. Wynn, an educator, founded EnPlay. EnPlay was established to bring youth and their parents together on common ground with the purpose of preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s world.
The EnPlay Foundation was established to bring children together with the purpose of empowering and nurturing them through play. We seek to assist children in the development of 1) self-responsibility, 2) community responsibility, and 3) global responsibility.
Ultimately, it is our hope that children and adults will understand that we all must coexist and live mutually in this world. Our foundation gives children from diverse backgrounds, opportunities to come together on common playing ground. It also encourages their parents/caregivers to cross barriers to interact in support of and appreciation for all parties involved.
Using athletics as a motivation, EnPlay seeks to empower, nurture and prepare today’s youth for tomorrow’s world by equipping its participants with the necessary tools needed to be successful in life, as well as, responsible, productive, and contributing leaders of their communities.
The EnPlay Foundation believes children should enjoy the benefits of organized sports. Recognizing that children have varying interests and abilities regarding sports, we strive to provide a program that encourages and challenges ALL involved participants. At The EnPlay Foundation, we strive to find the right fit for youth so every participant can realize success.
The EnPlay Foundation relies on a network of parents, coaches, former athletes, corporations, and other stakeholders to provide high-quality experiences for our youth. It is this support system that nurtures and empowers our youth.
Understanding that youth participation in sports is important to children's healthy development, The EnPlay Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for youth to engage in recreational, as well as, competitive activity. Additionally, The EnPlay Foundation helps youth to make connections between their participation in sports and their daily living.
Currently, EnPlay offers year-round basketball. In the future, we plan to add a number of additional sports including, but not limited to soccer, tennis, football, baseball, volleyball, and swimming.
In 2009, we had 60 participants in our basketball program. Our teams practice at various times and locations, and participate in leagues and various tournaments throughout the year. This year, we served over 200 youth. We are playing with a purpose!
If you are interested in supporting The Enplay Foundation, we are in need of schools, churches, individuals, etc. who will donate gym time/practice space to us.
